Guinea pigs have bad eyesight, and can get frightened by quick movements. If your pig doesn't have a shelter to run and hide in when it gets startled, it will be a nervous piggy. So for your pets health, a small house or two would be very helpful. You can use a small stool purchased at a dollar store, a plastic tub with a hole or two cut out of it, or the expensive cute houses from the pet store.
Below is a website on how to make a large cage for little money for your guinea pig. Most pet store cages are too small and too expensive. When we made our big cage, our pigs were so happy to have the extra room that they were leaping and running around! They smell better, and it is actually easier to clean.

All small animals like this should have shelter. Is it just a cage with no covering? A good hutch for a bunny or guinea pig is where a section of the cage (say 1/4 - 1/3 is completely covered aside from a little door. They need a warm, dry area where they feel safe and the hay should be in there. You put newspaper underneath then the hay and you should change the hay at least once a week if not more. Rabbits will wee a lot so it gets wet quickly. If you can't buy a new hutch then you should improvise. You can get all those little tunnels and so on for them to hide in or maybe you could somehow make a wooden box to put in it or cover a section of the cage with drop sheets or something. It is very important these animals are safe and warm. When it's wet you should move the cage to a covered area or when it's very hot they need shade from the elements.

Yes, guinea pigs prefer to have a house.
You should get it a "pigloo" from the petstore. Or even better yet, get it a wooden house so that it can chew on it and keep its teeth worn down.
Until then, a Kleenex box will do, but only until the piggy eats it!

Piggies need a place to get into to feel secure. The igloos they sell at pet stores are excellent. It is in their nature to burrow.
