You don't have to do that. It is always good to go to your mother or an older female adult so you can have someone to talk about it with. Changes are never fun, but they come with age! :)

However, if you have been sexually active, then it is a good idea to go see a doctor. Other than that, you're fine...it's normal...not fun! but normal! :)

Nearly twenty years ago, when my oldest daughter came to me for help, when she had her first period. We obtained some books from the library and studied up on the subject. You don't need to go to the doctor, provided that you are not having a severely excessive flow, but you can go to obtain a clean understanding of what is happening both to your body, and your brain. Yes, your brain is now moving into its final stage of development, but I will get to that in a minute.

One item of great importance, and this applies of all women of any age, is to drink significant amounts of water during this time. Soda pop, juices, etc. don't count, it needs to be water. The flow is not the only thing being dumped. Excess hormones are also being released into your blood stream, to be filtered out by your kidneys. Much of the cramping you are feeling is a result of this. The muscles are not getting the necessary amount of oxygen, water, and nutrients, so they cramp. The extra water will help wash these extra hormones out of your system.

In reading the books, we learned that my daughter should take two showers a day, but the reasoning may be objectionable to your mother. One of the best ways to shorten the duration of your period involves self pleasuring while in the shower. Whether you want, or should, use this method depends on your personal and religious beliefs. At least drink plenty of water.

Now, about your brain. When you turned age two, you entered the stage which separates us from the lower form animals. At this stage, the brain begins absorbing and storing significant amounts of data. More than 10 megabytes of data per second is being fed into your random access, or temporary memory areas of the brain. When you go to sleep, at night, that data is sorted, tabulated, and stored.

Now, you've reach puberty. Your brain has collected enough basic data to begin the next stage, developing conceptual thought processing, or the ability to understand why something is. This can be as basic as to why you don't touch the hot pot on the stove, and not simply because mom says it's hot. You understand what hot means. You are also beginning to understand what love means, but don't think you know what it means, because it takes decades to understand it. And if you think that before now, you already had the ability to understand things, consider the fact that Jesus didn't even develop this ability until age 12, and he was a perfect human being. Unless you believe, you are better than him.

As I said, the development of conceptual understanding is only just beginning. It will take you 12 years to complete this stage. Males take 18 years, until age 30. This is a wonderful time for you, You are now developing into what you will be, as an adult. Don't rush it. Things will come in their own time.

Remember to get plenty of sleep. All your growing and development take place at night. Not getting proper rest means you may not become all that you could have been. Good luck and a long and a healthy life.

Speaking on my daughter, she just called me. It's 5 A.M. and she wants to know if I'm still awake.

No. getting your first period is a natural thing in life that all woman go through. I know it is scary but our body is telling us that we can make babies now and that is the circle of life. If it makes you feel any better you should have a tea day with your mother and talk about it, if unfortunately your mother is not with you then find woman-guardian that you love and respect and have a tea day with her. I hope I was helpful. (-:
