You will need a router. Its possible to hook up to a computer with 2 network cards, but its not worth the hassle.

Hook the modem to the router...it will tell you where. Then you can either go wireless (no cables, but requires a bit more work) or wired (cables to run, but ultimately less fussing with it). I'd say for the first time, go wired. You'll need cat5 ethernet cable for the connections. You're ISP shouldn't charge extra for it, but if you're really worried about it, you can always unhook from the router, and put the main computer back on the modem, if you need to call for support. Just remember to reboot the modem if you do that.

Just get a cheap router. NetGear makes good ones. Your ISP will only charge more if your transmission volume is metered, because it will probably be higher if you're running two PCs on the same connection.

Some computers let you daisy-chain (that is, hook one computer up to another, then hook that one up to the Internet), but the disadvantage of this configuration is that the computer with the Internet connection has to be on for you to use the other computer. This restriction doesn't apply when you have a router.

In my configuration, my DSL splitter goes to my router (4 ports), and our 3 PCs are hooked up to the router. We still have a free port, so when friends come over, they can plug in and share pictures and stuff.

Simple solution.

U need two ethernet card on the system on which u've the connection.
on first one u'd already set the settings given by ur provider.
on second one connect cable from second system ethernet to first systems antother ethernet. Connection is thats all.

Configuration of proxy server:-
download proxyi software from the given url below(its free it may be 270 kb). Install it.
IF it installed correctly just start it by just click the green icon. then it would sit on the sytem tray..

Next configure system connection:-
on second systems, open local area connection dialog box and set ip as 192.168.1.5(something which is same like the first one but last number should be changed)
set subnet as 255.255.255.0
set gateway as 192.168.1.x ( where this ip is first machine ip)

Configure IE:-
open internet explorer in second machine
Goto internet option and click connection tab, then click Lan setting button, and tick the chock box in proxy server and enter the address of first machine IP and port number as 6588.
then close all window .
Thats's all
now your second machine is ready for browsing.

Have a nice day.

Usually it's no charge unless you rent the router from them.
