Definitely a good area to go into, as venues, studios and bands need sound engineers with the technical know-how to use PA and effects processing / recording equipment. Courses in sound engineering can be found at many colleges these days. It is, however, a very difficult field to get in once you are qualified though, and it may purely come down to contacts in the industry to get you a break into a job. Such is the populatrity of sound engineering courses these days there is a lot of competition for the few jobs that are available.

If you really have an ear for music and know what the band wants and what the audience wants, it can be great. If you're just an engineer, forget it, there are far too many sound engineers who are just "knob twiddlers" who know nothing about music at all and just want to play with their mixers etc.
If you really want to make a band sound as good as they can, then it's probably best you take a course, or at least shadow a good sound engineer for a while, pick up on what works for them, and see how you'd do it.
My band's lucky enough to own its own PA and we engineer ourselves most of the time. I've also used it to engineer other people including Martin Carthy, Mike Silver and Johnny Coppin, all fantastic folk musicians. The important thing for me is the clarity, purity and blend of sound. Each instrument and voice should be heard in the mix, but none should dominate. Avoid over using effects like reverb (particularly on Peavey gear as it's the tinniest, most toilet sounding reverb in the world!) and try to keep things natural.
It's a great job and you can earn good money doing it, but you will also have to spend a lot initially on equipment because if your equipment's no good, however good you are, it'll never sound right.
Hope this helps,
H.

There are many sound engineers in this world. It's a dream job for thousands of young men so you will need to be good ( i.e., CREATIVE) and have good connections to get anywhere.
And you have to be able to listen to electric "lead" guitarists inanely noodling for hours, without losing your temper!
I'd say it need good interpersonal skills, just like any job. Strangely, there are many introverts who dream of a career in sound engineering.

Absolutely! Sound as a art medium is really under-rated. Go for it!
