Because motorbike riders raised too much of a stink about wearing helmets.

It's because if there is a helmet law, riders will wear a helmet. The staties probably have issued a miniscule number of violations for not wearing a helmet. Seatbelts however are a nice little source for revenue building.

Because old ladies and children ride in cars, and rarely climb on the back of a ZX14!
Seriously, car drivers bought that "this law will save you" crap. Motorcyclists did not, realizing intelligently that no one is ever saved, and everyone dies eventually. They simply chose to have the right to die by head trauma.
Personally, I will wear a helmet at all times, even when I am riding in Florida or South Carolina. But if bubba-hey on his Iron Horse wants to become an organ donor, more power to him. It's nobody's business but his own.
Bottom line, car drivers are saddled with that seatbelt law because, on average, car drivers are much, much wimpier than bikers. And that's a statistical fact.
Cheers.

I live in FL and think it's insane too...although I don't often wear a helmet, the two laws don't make any sense together...LA did the same thing when I lived there, made helmets optional, seatbelts mandatory...

Many riders in FL believe it's just a matter of time, before we're required to wear helmets here...GA and AL (our neighbors) require them...

Seatbelts are not always good.

I came across a vehicle rolled onto its roof and the driver could not get out because the seatbelt release had jammed under the seat. The driver's door was blocked by the ditch and she could not reach the handle for the passenger door.

I agree --- Motorcyclists, in general, have some wish for freedom and are unwilling to give it up.

Your usual John Q. Public, who create and support these laws, ride in cars (or SUVs).

Myself, I wear a hat (read helmet) when it's cold or raining.
I have been known to wear a seatbelt on occaission (it's my choice)

Do you cruise around strapped into a bubble filled crunchmobile?

I won't.

because seatbelts save lives and a car is more dangerous than a motorcycle

Because its the law. Personally, I think all cagers should wear a helmet whether required or not. For one thing, it would keep you off the damn cell phone.
