When I was a kid dad made us one. He didn't remove the treading. He cut about 2/3 rds of the tire off except for the ring that fits the wheel. Then he turned the tire inside out. Tied ropes to it and hung it in the tree.

You can't "take" treading off since the tire is all one unit. That would take an awful lot of grinding to do. Just a word of caution tires aren't easy to cut as well. You will probably need a good band saw or something especially if it has steel ply!

Just get yourself a " bald" tire, (one that has been so worn down, that there is virtually no or little tread on it...see your local tire shop for one of those, or check around fields, always some one is dumping tires some where!).

My Dad, took a rope, slung it up in a tall tree, and just tied the tire on for us kids... (Of course that was after he just tied knots in it, and a few kids, including my brother slipped off of it and almost killed themselves, so he put the tire on).

I wish you well..

I don't know how to make the swing but you don't have to remove the treading to do so. The tread will be on the bottom.
