I think that most scholars in sociology, history, the study of western civilization, etc., would agree with me that the Industrial Revolution has been the most fascinating event that has happened since the development of agriculture, about 8,000-10,000 years ago.

Within a single lifetime, the entire way of life of western Europe changed from agricultural to industrial. The economy, which Emmanuel Wallerstein ("World-System Analysis") says was already leaning toward capitalism, became truly capitalist. The countries that accepted this economic system from the very beginning are today's wealthiest and most powerful nations.

[In some other venue or at some other time, I'll be happy to debate whether that's a "good thing.']

These are known as the "first world countries." Countries that rejected capitalism became the "second world," basically the communist nations of Russia (Soviet Union), China, and Cuba. As you probably know, Russia has switched to a market economy (capitalism) and China (although the leadership doesn't want to admit it) is already gaining success as a capitalist country. So long as Castro lives, Cuba may be the only hold out. But, Cuba did much better under communism than it was doing as a feudal system under the control of a tyrant.

Third world nations, whether capitalist or communist, as so far behind economically that they will not likely catch up....ever. Wallerstein calls these nations the "periphery" of the core of capitalist, industrialized, and highly urbanized societies.

I would say the Holocaust, because every single thing about the event boggles my mind. How can one person to that to another? How can a whole BUNCH of people do that to 6 MILLION people? How can a whole COUNTRY stand by and watch? Are people that sick and cruel? How could it have gone on for so long? How could there STILL be racists in the world? How can people deny the Holocaust these days?

So many questions, so little answers.

Moon landing or Sputnik, I would say. It is not only great because it praises mankind's glory, but also it means we ae able and we started to influence the whole world.

I agree the Jewish holocaust is the darkest point, but positive achievements are more fascinating in my opinion.

I think the entire Second World War... with the holocaust and all the foulness Hitler had... How stupid can u be to attack more territories than one with such a good technology but a little army. If he wouldn't have attacked Russia it would have been another world now...
