I think it is extremely overrated. It seems the author only wrote it as an excuse to swear. I know, I know---I am in the minority.

"The Catcher in the Rye" is a great book that details its main character's (Holden) walk along the edge of a cliff that separates childhood and adulthood. It is also a good social commentary on American society. If you can get past the fact that Holden swears almost constantly and find the plot and themes, you will like the book.

This is one of the greatest novels written in the 20th century. Salinger was a young literary prodigy writing with a depth and a candor so provocative for his time that his book was considered to be scandalous. Very few young authors today take such risks as to write about their experiences with such raw pure emotion.

when i read catcher in the rye, i couldnt help but be draw to holden, but at the same time, part of you wants to shake him about the shoulders and say, "snap out of it!" i wont even get into the leacherous teacher he visited...all in all, it is one of those great novels that, although it isnt very long, once you have read it, you feel as though you have completed something huge. i got the same feeling from "of mice and men."

I didn't like the book when I read it because I felt all he did was complain and never tried to make anything better. After I reflected on it however I realized that I could relate to the helplessness he feels.
