Ours is very compacted and bare from children and dog. It is also very uneven and so I was thinking of rotovating it to level it in the autumn. What is the best, sturdiest grass to sow/lay in England?

for a good hard wearing lawn you need a grass with high rye grass mix at least 40% as you are going to rotovate mix in a good compost and a fair amount of sand to try and prevent the lawn from becoming compacted
sow in the autum when the grass will not have to compete with weed seeds to germinate keep the ground damp till the seeds germinate you will see the green flush then water when it dries out keep the kids and animals off till it has established over winter if possible
cut when it is about 2inches long and keep your mower on its highest setting for the first year then lower gradually over the next year
the web site below supplies seed but its usually better and cheaper to buy from a local seedsman

Look around your garden centre for hard wearing seed, dont get the bowling green variety unless you have perfectly flat ground and excellent drainage. Good soil preparation is essential. Now is NOT the best time of year to either lay turf or sow seed. Make sure you water well and dont cut too soon or too short

Any good turf supplier will be able to point you in the right direction. The lawn I have is constantly battered by my 3 dogs and looks wonderful. Sorry I cannot remember the specfic grass variety.

i dont know about the type of grass..

but i can say that the denser the cover of seeds is the better the lawn will stand up to wear.

ps. if your weather is like canada.. kentucky blue grass... it has thicker blades and a deep bluey green hue to it.

Bermuda grass is hardy; a warm-season grass.

try creeping red fescue, it wears well and is good in cool or shady areas and does not require real good soil. I think it's better than perennial rye.
