I feel for your friends. We went through a alike situation with my brother. They came over with a visitor visa which I could change for my Mom, but not for my brother. My Mom passed away before his paperwork was done, leaving us with a mess. He is now married to an American girl, and his immigration lawyer told him it was good he didn't went back otherwise he couldn't return for 10 years. Now the kid should have some rights with american(?) father. A good lawyer might be your best bet, but they cost. good luck!!!

the kid has probably then lived in America long enough to apply for citizenship

also as some American tax money went into the university where the student was studying I hope that they would stay in America and put their stills to use in the US economy instead of moving their skills across a boarder

on a personal level, after universe they are probably going to become the center of economic stability for their mother, who probably still doesn't have access to health insurance, and it would be good for this university educated recent entrant to the the middle class to be near by and able to take care of her needs

She should get the best grades possible and get a company to sponsor her.

...If you don't get good grades ya'll have to leave the country.
