Well, it's great for pain but really slows down the labor. It can also prevent you from being able to push hard enough and making an episiotomy necessary, as well as using a suction device to "PULL" the babies head out...

As with and anesthesia, there are many risks and side affects. Some include, not getting the needle in the right place, causing nerve and tissue damage, possibly paralyzing you, back pain for months afterward, headache, shaking uncontrollably, wow, there's more but I can't remember them all right now.

Your Dr. should have information available to you if you are considering one.

I'm guessing you are wanting it for childbirth. I had a baby 11 months ago with only one shot of something. I don't remember what it was called but I don't think it even worked. Besides that, you can get through childbirth with no drugs. It is possible you know? How do you think they used to do it back in the old days? Just so you don't think I had an easy labor, I labored for 12 hours and I was stuck at 7cm for almost 2 hours. Pain? No. Hell? No. Unimaginable? HA! It was bad though, really, but I just kept my mind on relaxing to get that baby out the safest way possible and screamed and whatever and when it was finally over it was truly over. Once you see that precious bundle, you have no memory of what just happened. You don't even care.

So anyway, I hope you decide on whatever is best for you but I wouldn't recommend one. I didn't have one and I'm usually a wuss about pain.

Epidurals are very safe. There is a slim chance if the anesthesiologist doesn't put it in correctly, you could have paralysis or be numb, but the chances of that happening are a million to one.

I think the most common complaint from people who have epidurals are spinal headaches. I never had one...my first son was an epidural baby and my second son was a spinal block baby, and I never had any problems.

I don't really know. I couldn't have one because I have a tiny bit of sclorosis right where they would put an epidural. I had my son without anything...NEVER AGAIN!!

BTW I had an episiotomy and it healed just fine...actually INCREASED my sexual pleasure when it did heal!! I had a Brilliant OB/GYN!!

When I had knee surgury they said they would use an epi, I tried to let them know my past problems but they wouldn't listen. When the anesthieologist came in he wasn't able to do one and ended up giving me a spinal block instead....but didn't tell me or my surgeon...

That wasn't pretty...I woke up three times in surgury with the worst migraine of my entire life...and afterwards I had a terrible reaction to it...I'll just say this "Dry Heaves!!" UGH!!

Not in the least bit bad. I had one for my LAST child 7 yrs ago. Worked great. Ended up having a C-section AFTER 17+ hours of induced labor!!! 3 weeks early he was.

I would say its pretty safe..but would recommend the spinal block rather,.I just went with Pethadene that helped, NOTHING!Just remember epidural can cause missive headaches or even longterm migranes. Why?When they insert the needle and even the smallest ammount of air gets into you spine its hell....
Ask your midwife/gine for info before you decide...

No problem at all if you don't mind the increased chance of getting an episiotomy that will take years to heal properly, probably destroying your chances of ever enjoying sex again. Or if you don't mind the increased chance of having a c-section which also increases your chances of getting a big time infection or death. Your choice, good luck with that.

When I had it worked for one side and on the other I could still feel strong contractions - or may b not as strong as they r but still. Finally had to go in 4 a C-section as the baby was not descending well.
All was fine after that.
Best wishes for luck.

no, not bad, but make sure you have a good anesthesiologist. mine hit a nerve with my last labor and my back and leg were messed up for a few months. The doctor said that the spaces between my disks were to small. but they acted like it was alot smaller than normal. most women are fine. my sister said it was great.

I have had three children completely natural. Have a positive attitude about the birth of your child. If you absolutely cant handle it get your drugs. With your warning that many people have had back problems ever since!
