It's the *chance* at winning big that draws so many people to gambling.

I think the various answers you have received tell you alot.
There are different reasons for why people gamble.
For some it really is an entertainment option, that they can afford and control and really enjoy. For others it is an entertainment option that they really honestly cannot afford.
For far too many people it is an ever-escalating addiction. Even if they can afford to gamble -- they cannot stop -- and it ends in ruin for them and their familes. It is really sad.
For gambling addicts -- it isn't the winning or possibility of winning that they are going for. They are addicted to the "action" -- the feeling they get when they gamble -- win or lose. Winning doesn't really even enter into the picture -- which is why when they do win, they end up going on to lose their winnings too.
It isn't a good thing and the growth of gambling beyond Vegas into riverboats and off-track betting parlors has caused far more heartbreak than they would ever want to be confronted with.
Internet gambling is the worst, because there are so many unethical places that really stack the odds against you and it is so hard to regulate those places and keep them within even the gamblong commission limts (that they are supposed to be following). Those odds are bad and these places are even worse than those odds.
I hope this recent crack-down on Internet gambling works because there are so many potential casualties of it -- from children getting involved to families being destroyed even easier because of the easy and confidential access.

Because gambling is addictive. It always gives you the feeling that winning is around the corner.
My sister had a method: she'd go to the casino with a certain amount of money and that's it - no credit cards, nothing. When the money'd been gone, she'd go out. That way, you regard it as a sort of entertainment, not much different than paying $100 to get on some rollercoasters in an amusement park.

Because it's fun...it's entertainment. If you can keep yourself in control, it's not much different than spending money on a cruise, Hawaii, etc...
When we go, we usually have free hotel rooms, free food, and I always look for reasonable (cheap!!) airfare. So I just count my gambling money into the cost of saving on everything else.

It's the thrill of the chase. The possiblity of hitting it big. That's what people hope for and keep trying to achieve.

I think most people consider it an entertainment expense, except for those who have a serious problem.

For the same reason that teens believe they are proof against pregnancy or car crashes: they don't believe that they can lose.

Entertainment. Most folks save their money for vacation and can afford it. When you get older you Will figure it out.
