i've seen this around the newspaper recently

"work from home! recieve $5 for every envelope stuffed with our sales material. guaranteed! free info. 24-hour recording. 1800 423 2089"

as an incoming college freshman i'd be lying if i said i wasnt totally hoping for the best. however when i called, they said to give your address after the beep and theyd mail more informtation. they also asked for a $40 dollar registry fee.

my question is: are these things ever legitimate? has anyone tried this?

*ALL* the things you see like that are a scam. What they do is you send them the $40.00 and they send you a few lists of MORE places you can call to send $40 to, so that you can stuff envelopes at home.. It's rather like the pyramid scam. Never, ever, EVER... ever trust those kinds of advertisements. Never.

They have been around since I was a teen if not long before.

If you want quick money, or a stay at home job - your best bet is to either look at selling a product or item on ebay (garage sale things, art, whole sale items). Or go out and get a part time regular job.. or else take the 6 week CENA course at your local college that gets you a certified nursing aide certificate.

Then you can choose your own hours, and the kind of people you take care of. Such as working 4 hours 2 days a week in some elderly man's home making his dinner, helping him bathe or get out of bed, etc. You can earn between 8 and 15 dollars an hour depending on your areas income level.

You can also walk dogs for people (put up flyers), you can house sit, or dog sit in their house. (again, post up flyers in stores, in apartment buildings, on campus). You can babysit (unless you're a male then you should avoid that job), wash cars, detail cars (clean the inside of them really good), etc.. lots of work YOU can promote and do yourself so you are your own boss. (with hardly any overhead cost on your part)

Good luck kiddo and stay away from those 'at home' scams.

It is scam..yes... what it is, is you send them $5 to get a complete list of info... They send you a stuffed envelop with their flyer telling you, that you can do the same...

They will tell you to put an add out to stuff envelopes for a $5 processing fee. They you stuff an envelope with your flyer stating to the person who sends you the five dollars that they can pull the same scam...

It sucks.

In every case I've checked out, they are a scam. I have checked out 5 different ones and the BBB in their area all have complaints against them.

Envelope stuffing is a rip-off. You deliver them funds and they deliver you decrease back a letter that tells you to do a similar as they did. promote, take funds, deliver letter affirming to do a similar as you probably did.

scam or not, why in heavens name would I pay someone to work for them?? it really doesn't make sense. Even if it's legit, in some way, it's a scam.
