Are you a guest, or the groom? If you are the groom, you get to decide, along with your bride, how formal you want things to be. If she's wearing a long white dress, you should wear a suit.
As a guest, try to find out what the wedding party is wearing. If they are going to be in formal wear, you really should be wearing a suit. If the men in the wedding party are in suits, you can get away with a jacket and tie, and dress slacks. If it's a really casual, beach thing, pretty much anything goes, but I'd stick with at least dress pants, a jacket, and a dress shirt that will also look good without a jacket or a tie--silk shirts are good for that. I know people go to beach weddings in shorts and tee shirts, but unless the invitation makes a point of telling you to dress that way, I wouldn't. It seems a bit disrespectful to me.

It's your wedding so you can decide what ever you want to wear: I mean I would certainly go with something more open if your wedding is going to be on a hot day. My father didn't wear a suit: he wore a new pair of jeans and a nice blouse. Of course most people expect you to be a little formal so if you don't want to wear a suit wear a light coloured blouse with a flower and some black nice looking pants. It's simple and yet not TOO much.
I mean anything is better than a sweaty groom.

depends on local customs and weather. if the local customs require you to wear a suit then you should.
