mouth ulcer (from Latin ulcus) is the name for the appearance of an open sore inside the mouth caused by a break in the mucous membrane or the epithelium on the lips or surrounding the mouth. The types of mouth ulcers are diverse, with a multitude of associated causes including: physical or chemical trauma, infection from microorganisms or viruses, medical conditions or medications, cancerous and sometimes nonspecific processes. Once formed, the ulcer may be maintained by inflammation and/or secondary infection. Two common mouth ulcer types are aphthous ulcers (canker sores) and cold sores caused by the herpes simplex
Symptoms
The symptoms preceding the ulcer may vary according to the cause of the ulcerative process.
Some mouth ulcers may begin with a tingling or burning sensation at the site of the future mouth ulcer. In a few days, they often progress to form a red spot or bump, followed by an open ulcer.
The mouth ulcer appears as a white or yellow oval with an inflamed red border. Sometimes a white circle or halo around the lesion can be observed. The grey, white, or yellow coloured area within the red boundary is due to the formation of layers of fibrin, a protein involved in the clotting of blood. The ulcer, which itself is often extremely painful, especially when agitated, may be accompanied by a painful swelling of the lymph nodes below the jaw, which can be mistaken for toothache.
Causes
There are many processes which can lead to mouth ulceration. In some cases they caused by an overreaction by the body's own immune system. Factors that appear to provoke them include stress, fatigue, illness, injury from accidental biting, hormonal changes, menstruation, sudden weight loss, food allergies and deficiencies in vitamin B12, iron and folic acid. Some drugs, such as nicorandil, have been linked with mouth ulcers
Treatments based on antibiotics and steroids such as Dexamethasone Elixir are reserved for severe cases, and should be used only under medical supervision. Tetracycline suspension is a common antibiotic prescribed for mouth ulcers. Some doctors may also prescribe a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, for cases of multiple or severe mouth ulcers. If it does not heal within a week, a doctor or dentist may cauterize it using a silver nitrate applicator or laser. This procedure immediately burns off the ulcer, causing it to completely disappear within a few hours or two to three days.
In very severe cases, a doctor may prescribe a steroid treatment. One such steroid is methylprednisolone (usually in a dose-pack), taken orally for a period of 7 days. Alternatively, the doctor may directly inject a steroid into the site of the ulcer (this treatment is performed with kenalog. Between 0.2 and 0.4 cc of kenalog is injected into the site of the ulcer, which will usually be completely healed 72 to 96 hours after the injection).
Some dentists recommend a sulfuric acid solution for treating mouth ulcers, such as debacterol.
Another choice doctors have is to prescribe Aphthasol (amlexanox oral paste, 5%), the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment specifically indicated for Aphthous ulcers.
The miracle cures that are advertised should be viewed with skepticism. However, aqueous sulphuric acid products as listed above can provide significant pain relief, if not treating the underlying causes.
Prevention
The majority of the types of ulceration, require treatment of the underlying cause of the oral ulceration for successful prevention; Controlling imbalances in vitamins and minerals related to ulceraction, managing or restricting the disease processes has shown to reduce the ulcerative process. For trauma related cases, avoiding the offending source will prevent ulceration, but since such trauma is usually accidental, this type of prevention is not usually practical.
The best way to get rid of ulcers is to leave it alone, using medication could possibly take longer

Wow, it is so surprising how little is known about a mouth ulcer as painful as they are and if you have chronic ulcers like myself. These are not herpes simplex sores that forms outside the mouth and brought on by stress. I've actually struggled with mouth ulcers for decades and I can say that I have found a real cure after months of testing. *** Start taking a probiotic ***
The good and bad bacteria gets out of balance in your gut because of modern foods and especially sugars like high fructose corn syrup. Not one doctor, dentist or gastrointestinal specialist has been able to help me but I've discovered probiotics are bullet-proof. I may still get an ulcer after four or five months but then I just kick up the probiotic regimen and then I'm cured again. Just ask for probiotics from your local health food store or vitamin shop. Hopefully this helps you too.

Normally children get mouth sores when their stomach is upset, indigestion etc. Borax had been used from ancient times for stomach ulcers as well as mouth ulcers. In homeopathic doses normally not more than three doses in 30 potency are necessary. The main symptom for the use of Borax is fear of downward motion, and startling from sudden sounds. In the modern era, the nomal reason for stomach upsets is slight food poison by pesticides, or other reasons. One dose of Arsenic Album at 30 potency(three globules) usually remove the aphthae overnight and second doses usually need not be resorted to. In some cases where late sitting for study, examination and like give stress to children and give rise to worries and therefore, ulcers which is reflected as aphthae in the mouth too, and also if some one has taken too much coffee, tea and or with alcoholic drinks, Nux Vomica in 30 potency is found most effective. If it is with bad breath, either nux or Mercurious 30 will cure according to symptoms. If it is close to the joint of tthe tongue and mouth and one single one, Thuja will certainly cure with one single dose. In the case of indigestion and high fever, the ulcers come out as eruptions and is outside the lips or mouth and are cured with Natrum Mur or arsenic album. Aphthae in children only indicates an upset stomach. At the most a congested chest. Get well soon.

I got identified with herpes (type 2) about three years back, when I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. I realize loads of young women say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a huge mistake that one time and suddenly it seemed like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date men again. After all, who wants to go out with a girl that has sores around her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this video https://tr.im/IbYom everything changed.
Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the herpes virus from my body in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love again. Now I hope that I can help others by sharing this story.

Is it a canker sore? They can be avoided by several things -- lowering stress levels, cutting acidic foods from your diet, and not chewing gum... a lot of times, when you chew gum, you accidentally bite your cheek or lip and cause a sore.
Next time they get really bad, call a dentist and ask him to use some "black magic" on your sores. (It's a black goo that cauterizes the sore and makes it heal faster.) It hurts like crazy right at first, but within minutes, the pain is gone.
