Write it under the alias. If you have a publisher, ask that the checks be written out to your real name. Or, if you prefer, have the checks written out to your assumed name, and when you get them, write "Pay to the order of [your real name]," sign the fake person's name, and then sign your real name.

Sandy is right. Also you can't really get in trouble for writing about something, this country has free speech. If you are writing about the government or the mob and the really don't want you to say what you are saying then nothing could protect you from them trying to mess up your life. If they really want to get you, they will no matter what alias you use. I guess it's up to you if you want to risk that to tell the truth. The government doesn't care in most cases though, unless what you are saying is true and you get a big following.
I'm curious what you are writing about by the way. Could you at least give me the alias you plan to use so i can look this up if it gets published.

yes. stephen king did it. most of the time it's because these mainstream book writers want to change up their style w/out losing their loyal fans. they do it because there is no risk. if it bombs? well then it doesn't hurt their careers, but if it hits? they all of a sudden reveal that they were the real person who penned it. so my answer is yes, I'm sure you can write a book and use an alias. The book Primary Colors was authored by Anonymous and he still made millions.

It's not really a big problem. You just have to discuss that over with the publisher. The publisher, under a legal cotract ofcourse, will keep your identity hidden and provide you ofcourse of your share of the profit.
Many writters and not to mention actors use aliases so it's not something new. But be sure not to use the real name of the person your writing about because you can be charged with slander.

I answered a question like this and I wasn't rude or crude and I believe I gave you (or whoever it was) very sound advice concerning writing under a pseudonym.
Anyway, all legit publishers will protect your identity.

Truth and fear. To overcome your fear, you should have courage. You should have the courage to protect truth, if it serves some purpose in interest of people in general. We live in a world of relative truth. We should, therefore, interpret truth from the relative point of view only.In this way, truth will come out without any harm.

When you publish it...make sure it stays under your alias, but make sure the publisher knows that it is truly you. And swear them to secrecy.

ask your agent...a LOT of writers have pen names. you still get paid, it's just not your real name on the book
