Are they termites? If so, you want to get that checked out REAL quick, because they may be ruining more than just your marble steps! Major structural damage may be going on underneath there somewhere!!

Never seen a white ant but grits(the kind we eat) or a chalk line around the steps should work.
Place dry grits around and they will carry them back to the nest. A friend of mine had fire ants in Florida and he used the grits and got rid of the entire nest.

Yeah, I concur. They are likely termites, and that means you may have a bigger problem that what you thinking. Check the yellow pages for exterminators/pest control. Many will give you a free evaluation and estimate. If they are termites they come into homes in several different ways, but typically through tunnels at the base of your home. Likely, termite treatment will consist of a small trench around your home and a long-lasting chemical will be applied there to kill them off. Good luck!

aquire black paint from home improvement store and apply generously on ants. white ants will become black, then you can hate them the way everyone else does.
