The Arab traders called the land East of the river Indus* as India, and its inhabitants Indians. The river Indus* runs through what is today Pakistan and India. Christopher Columbus trying to reach India from Europe through a western route reached America and mistakenly thought he had reach India thus calling the native americans as Indians.
*Indus River: great trans-Himalayan river of South Asia and one of the world's longest rivers, with a length of 1,800 miles (2,900 km).
