The great apes are potential tool users; chimpanzees are the only actual tool users besides humans (they use pieces of straw to draw ants and termites out of a mound so they can eat them). Gorillas make nests and pick up objects. The orangutan has been observed mimicking humans. Julia Roberts has had an orangutan help her wash her clothes.

The smaller monkeys only use their hands to climb or to grab fruit so they don’t really have hands; they are closer to hand-like paws. Only the great apes have a hand, with five fingers, and actually use it like a hand. After all part of the definition of a hand is a manipulative organ, so if you don’t use it to manipulate your environment then it really isn’t a hand, it’s a paw.

I have seen dogs try to manipulate their environment, to carry their food bowl, or bat at the ball. The same thing is true for cats and other intelligent animals. They all have paws though; they lack the opposable thumb. I think a true hand is one that is used to manipulate the environment.

The easy answer is all monkeys and the Panda have hands, but I would confine that answer to only the three Great Apes: the orangutan, the chimpanzee, and the gorilla.

among animals primates use their forelimbs much as human beings use their hands. One must also note that the hands in Primates are also used for locomotion unlike man the only primate that does not use hands for locomotion
