my cousin has been working with me for a week at this restaurant and so far she has to still be told more than once how to do things, and she works so slow. and i could kind of see the boss is getting irratated by it. i feel so sorry for her because she tries so hard , she is always nice to everyone and shows up everyday. but she is so slow and they always keep reminding her how to do things, and to speed up. i feel so bad, b/c i want her to suceed she is such a good girl and so sweet and shy. and i love having my cousin around. but what should i do to help her or what should she do and do you think she will be fired soon?

Yes, it sounds like her job is at risk....you sound right to be concerned.

In the restaurant business there is no time for slow movers, especially when the big rushes of customers come in, (example: lunch).

If she needs to learn a boost in speed, I suggest she take home a copy of the menu and study it. You could help her by quizzing her on menu items. If she knows the menu and the prices by heart, she will be much faster in taking or processing orders (if she is waiting or cooking). Also, if she is waiting tables, you could help out by drilling her on orders for example, saying "I want the chefs special, no cheese, and a small coffee black" and see how fast she can repeat and write the things down, and how well she remembers special orders.

Working is just like anything else, practice makes perfect. Take home a menu copy and help her out, then her boss will be amazed at how much speedier she is and how she's improved! :D

Good luck...it's very nice of you to want to help her! She's very lucky to have you for a cousin.

Sometimes there aren't any specific signs. They may just be keeping an eye on her work at this point. Keep in mind how your cousin is feeling. You may like having her around but if she just isn't "getting" the job she may be miserable too. May be best to help her find a place she can fit in better. Then at least she will be happy in her job instead of miserable thinking she's a terrible person who can't do anything and is now fired. Help her figure out where her strengths are and pursue opportunities in those fields. Hope this helps.

Gosh only a week ... that's asking alot from someone who may be a slow starter. However, your cousin may not be suited for restaurant work. Working in that environment requires a person to be a quick learner and the ability to multi-task. And if your boss has high expectations then in a few weeks (should her performance not improve) he may call her into the office and give her her walking papers.
To help her you could talk to her about her work and mention the things she may need to improve. Ultimately it will be up to her to become more productive. I wish you well in your efforts to try and help her. And the signs that someone is going to be fired are usually subtle but, as previously mentioned, the boss calls the person into the office and gives them their notice of termination.

It doesn't sound good. Most employers will give you a certain amount of time to learn how to do the job, but if she isn't showing signs of improvement after a week, she's probably not going to make it.

Try practicing with her or quizzing her after work. If there's something in particular she keeps forgetting that annoys your boss, focus helping her learn that first.

A good attitude will help her keep the job longer than she might otherwise, but she needs to start showing potential soon or she won't be keeping that job. Tell her the things that you've noticed as being problems and offer to help her get better.
