I belong to a sorority and if you are interested in joining one then the best thing for you to do is to research the available information on the sororities you have to choose from. Talking to some of the members can also help you to get a feel for their organization and the types of people who may belong to each group already. As far as what types of people join sororities, that varies. Some women are shy, some outgoing and some are everything in between. And as far as being invited to join, in my sorority you would pretty much only have to worry about having an invitation to join if you were talking about joining a graduate chapter vs an undergrad one. Some sororities have membership information on their national web pages. There you will find frequently asked questions and the requirements for membership that the National office have set forth, you would also want to check with the organizations or the extracurricular office at you school as they may have additional requirements that you may have to meet in addition to the ones set forth by the National office.

I went into college with the completely wrong idea of sororities. I judged from TV and movies, and assumed they were all ditzy crazy party girls who had to pay to make friends.
Well I was certainly wrong. While there are sororities that fit the general stereotype, there are even more that break the mold. Don't look at sororities as a club or activity to join, but a group of people or friends who have a personal bond and lots in common.
There are all kinds of sororities for all different people. My campus has the party girls, the smart girls, and even the black and latina sororities. Your chances of birng invited vary by the sorority and how you would fit into them.
Look for the girls that you can be friends with, and relate too. Dont judge by looks or popularity. Attend any meet the greeks and rush parties your school may have. Get to know these people, and take your time with this desicion. Don't join one for just the sake of being in it.
As for me, I'm in a wonderfull sorority called Nu Sigma Tau. I joined not because of thier parties, stigma, or any other reason. Above all else these were the girls I became friends with and had a connection, there was no problem getting a bid because we were already close when I decided to join.

What university are you planning on attending? Sororities and sorority recruitment vary a great deal from school to school. For instance, at a Southern university with a strong Greek tradition (think LSU, Ole Miss, Georgia, etc.), recruitment is very competitive. You need references, usually freshman only receive bids, etc. On the other hand, at a school were Greek life does not "rule" campus, such as Middle Tennessee State University, Clarkson University, Northeastern, etc., there tends to be a more diverse group of women who go through recruitment and the sororities are a lot less stereotypical. Hope that helps!
