You have wonderful insights here. Government ineptness is a 'given' because governments generally have no incentive to be efficient or relevant. The leading economist Milton Friedman (read any of his books for an excellent education in economics and governments) notes that governments can only provide products or services that the consumer either:
1) does not want, or
2) does not want at the price necessary to provide the service.
The proof of Friedman's point is simple. If the services governments provided (other than national security and the judicial system) were really wanted by people, entrepreneurs in the private sector would provide those services!
You are right that we only have 'ourselves to blame'. We elect the politicians who then bring home the 'pork' so we will re-elect them. Pork means everyone loses, but we don't see the truth in that when it gives us a job (that we hate!).

Actually, i should think that this has been the most captivating question yet. Brilliant question. If i could give points for a question, i'd give a hundred to you. So here's something though.. Firstly, by voting, not everyone picks or chooses the government that is elected so you get the members of public who may get a lil' sour with the majority vote. Second, heard of the phrase, "if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself!"? It's interesting this phrase because, the word "right" here, does it not differ with each individual? No matter how "right" the decision you may make, would it not be wrong in someone else's eyes? In a crowd of a thousand people, you'd get at least one person who disagrees with the decision. We elect government bodies to make the best decisions that suit the entire country. Unfortunately, there's always gonna be a number of people that disagree with decisions but we can't have a number of decisions to suit every individual's preference can we? Therefore, of course you're gonna get people who "blame" the government. Can you honestly say you're absolutely and totally comfortable with every decision the government's made? I on the other hand prefer to look at what i have as a citizen. Security and the basics. The things that matter the most. The needs as in comparison to the wants. I'm happy knowing my loved ones are safe. I'm happy knowing that's one of the government's priorities. Blame? That's an irresponsible thing to do. Throw the people who blame into government.. and you think you won't get others who complain? This reply could even go into the essence of human beings but i shall not go into that now. I hope you catch my drift though.. :o)

people blame the government because it is the easiest scapegoat. if there is something wrong in your life there are two options, either it is your fault or it is someone else's fault. if it is your fault then you must do something to make things better. if it is someone else's fault you can just sit there and ***** about it until things change. I personally feel that it is better to take personal responsibilty because the increase in self-respect that you will receive will make things seem better even if nothing actually changes. that is why I am a conservative libertarian. based on your question I think that you are at least a little to the right of center on the political spectrum.
in my opinion the current crop of republicans have abandoned their conservative roots and need to be booted out and replaced with true conservatives so that the country will move in a direction that will continue to allow people to make their own lives better.

People blame the government because the people voted on who got elected to offices in the government. The people, once elected don't always do the right thing, thus, when people blame the government, they are blaming the people they elected. So, they are also blaming themselves, because they voted for the candidates that are in the government.

first, i have noticed how much of people's energy is wasted at blaming anyone for anything without ever delving into what they have done themselves that may have led to a problem.
second, people are perpetual complainers. how often do you hear a compliment?
third, i see that about 90% of voting americans are followers rather than leaders and will follow along with whatever happens to be the popular theme any time, anywhere, rather than to think for themselves.
fourth: why do we allow ourselves to be taxed to pay politicians, who, for the most part, are either dishonest or downright stupid?
fifth: where is a law or amendment to the constitution that says that politicians must be ACCOUNTABLE for their deeds to we, who elected them?
sixth: i rather like referendum voting on separate acts because when you have other issues all included in one bill, the people do not know why they are behind or against any bill.
seventh: people love to blame and to blame and to blame.

you're a deadset fool mate. the subject is grasping bankers gave loans to those who couldnt locate the money for them, speculating that the upward push in assets fee could conceal the shortfall while they got here to repossess (and dont think of this wasnt their plan all alongside). while it didnt take place (expenditures increasing), human beings on $20k a year with $400k mortgages discovered they couldnt pay their loans and given the quantity of unsecured loans they wrote the glut on the industry observed expenditures spiral sharply downwards. the government could have positioned a stop to this education with law yet didnt. Now they're left to bail out those kinds of grasping banks. those bankers who perpetrated this could be jailed and jailed for a bloody long term. Doubt it is going to take place however.

"NATHANAEL BEAL" talked about Milton A, Friedman, who won the Noble Prize for Economic Science in 1976. What he failed to mention is that he specifically wrote his theories for conservative Republican administrations, such as Nixon, and Reagan. He was anti-worker, pro employer, just as Republican administrations are. Friedman espoused corporate deregulation as if this were a good thing. "A government of the people, for the people, by the people" does not apply to corporations who buy government officials, regardless of political affiliation.

It is easier than taking responsibility for their own actions. Certain people in New Orleans and ex smokers (I used to smoke) want to blame the government instead of themselves. You have the choice to smoke or not; you had the chance to leave; why are you blaming the govt instead of your own shortcoming is for your misery. Mama is not the government

No body knows this for sure, but.....
The majority of us feel that no matter what we do, we cannot change the system.
for example - lets say you voted for a president based on what he said in his campaign.
Then... a year into his presidency - he lied and didn't do what he promised.
What can you do then?
The problem is - most people in this country don't trust politicians.
The worst part is - we have had any great moral or civil leaders to look up to since the 60's.
I don't know if i explained that well or not... but I hope it helped.
