barefoot walking is DEFINITELY not good on the treadmill, especially if you're going at high speeds. banging your feet against the hard surface will do some damage not only on your heels but eventually on your knees and lower back. wear comfy tennis shoes to absorb the shock and protect your knees and lower back!!

From experience with walking around barefoot/in sandals, you could do some damage to your feet. I got a collapsed arch once which was the worst pain I've ever felt to this very day. It can also damage your knees as they'll be taking all the shocks. Also, it can't be very sanitary to have your sweaty bare feet on the treadmill everyday LOL

I would say it effects the arches of the feet more than the joints. But what do I know? I do it both ways too, sometimes. But shoes really are better.
