Depends on the type of synthetic oil :

Polyalphaolefin (PAO) - manufactured from an alpha olefin (eg hex-2-ene). The original olefin is a petroleum by-product, however the resulting synthetic oil is much less prone to oxidation as the polymerisation process removes the double bond leaving an saturated alkane with methyl sidegroups - very stable!

Dibasic-ester : An ester which is "dual ended" R1C00-(CH2)n-COOR2.
Usually symetrical (ie R1 = R2). Used to enhance solubility in PAOs. The molecule may be either naturally derived or fully synthetic.

Polyglycols (PEGS) : Usually derived from petroleum byproducts.

Synthetic Hydrocarbons (SHCs) : Derived from ethylene (eg a short chain polyethylene) and similar. Also by Fischer-Troph rearrangement.
