There´s plenty to do in Cancun. First you should check in a hotel that accomodates your budget and vacationstyle...an all inclusive resort is great for families because you get the band in your wrist and everything is included inside the premises, great kidsclub so you can enjoy nightlife with your wife without worriying about your children. The Riou properties, Melias and Avalons are good choices.
If you have a smaller budget you might stay at downtown´s hotels like the Radisson Hacienda or The Xbalanque, both great choices at affordable prices.
If you wanna come to Cancun with AAA Budget, stay at Le Meridien you are going to love-it! The Ritz is great but is not open yet and is a bit stiffy you know?, Le Meridien, Gran Melia Cancun, Fiesta Americana Acqua and Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, all of them great properties worth every penny.
Activities:
*Sian K´an Reserve
*Swimming with dolphins at Xcaret
*Boat rides to Cozumel and Isla Mujeres
*Visit Chichen Itza, amazing archeological site
*Dinner: Great Restaurants and/or Fast Food, all budgets, all flavors...
*Dancing: Dady´O, Dady Rock, Coco Bongo´s, Pat O´Brien´s...ask any local and the will tell you the hippest club around, Señor Frog´s is a must, you name it!
*Malls: Throughout the Hotel Zone, Kukulcan Plaza is my favourite one, it has movies, restaurants, great boutiques...mayor franchises
*At the Airport, right on your arrival you will be given a kit of coupons and a magazine called CancunTips...the discounts are good and you will get all possible information from that magazine, don´t throw it away!! It has everything you need from religious services and churches to hospitals, hotels and emergency phones.
This is just a small list of suggestions, you can go to www.travelyucatan.com and www.cancuntips.com so you can take a good look of all the variety of activities available in Cancun and surrounding areas...Welcome to Mexico!

Cancun is a built up tourist place with many nice big hotels, restaurants and shopping centers as well as the downtown market. It actually has THE best beaches in Mexico. There will be beach activitesi like jet ski and parasialing right on the beach. Your hotel will also have information on other activities and there are plenty of them. But do beware of the undertow warnings posted daily.
Cancun is set up perfectly for tourists with all of the hotels in a location called “the hotel district”. I have stayed at the Mariott and at the Sheraton. All of the hotels there in the hotel district are great. There are a large variety of restaurants and a couple of shopping malls in the hotel district. There is no need for a car because there is continuous bus service up and down the hotel district that will take you where ever you need/want to go for about $1.00. You can also take the bus into town if you want to go to the market or just see the town. From Cancun you can take tours to Chichen Itza, and Xcarat and some other great places. There are a lot of beach activities in Cancun like parasailing, jet skiing, surfing, and lots of fun things for couples, like the booze cruise and the jungle cruise across the lagoon. You can reserve tours online; we used the Best Day tour company and they were good and so was our tour to Chichen Itza.
Check out the web sites below. No, I don't need a G-mail account, got one already.

There’s plenty to see in Cancun. You can check out the Dolphins / Sea Lions reserve, Cozumel Islands, Tulum ruins, Cancun Island, Coba ruins, Sian Ka An reserve, go to the beach etc. As for shopping, you do get a lot of discount (depends on what you’re buying) just check out a few shops before you buy things.
If you’re looking for budget hotels, try the downtown ones like CARIBE INTERNACIONAL HOTEL & SUITES (starts from 55 US$ onwards), HOTEL BATAB (54 US$ onwards), IMPERIAL LAGUNA CANCUN (60 US$ onwards) CITY EXPRESS CANCUN (60 US$ onwards) This hotel is highly recommended and is close to the shopping malls. Visit the web site of the hotels mentioned above for further discounts. You may have to give your credit card details for guarantee of reservation.
Have fun in Cancun!

For clear water beaches, stay by Punta Cancun - Fiesta Americanan (High End) and Hyatt Cancun Caribe (Middle/Low End Cost-Vise)... Excellent food at Hyatt! Must visit La Isla for shopping and great dining! Must take trip to Cozumel! Hilton Hotel is excellent too, but beach water is choppy and sand is not as smooth!

There is a lot of things to do in Cancun, my favorite ones are, scuba diving, eat at Rolandis and stay in Tulum and Playa del Carmen.
My recommendations when arriving is to hire private transfer to your hotel with Discovery Mundo. And for scuba diving find for Always Diving. Those are my personal recommendations. Algo go to fishing.

Do not eat suspicious food - I got the worst food poisoning in Cancun and I'm very careful with that type of stuff.
