Several versions of the story exist. The most popular, or at least the most reported, is that Electron and Proton were discovered when they were a warm-up act for the Electric Light Orchestra back in the late 1970's. Their stage presence was magnetic and they soon transitioned to larger circles, accelerating to appearances in cameo in two Cheech and Chong movies and working the campaign trial with Michael Dukakis.
Sadly, Proton lost a long battle with alcoholism in 1989. Without him, Electron's charm was lost, and his quarkie antics no longer attracted grants. When he could no longer quant on show biz , he quietly degraded and today works with homeless pets in a spay and neutron clinic.

In 1911 Ernest Rutherford discovered the nucleus of the atom. In 1917 Rutherford succeeded to split the nucleus. Rutherford had put a source of alpha-particle in vacuum. In the vacuum the alpha-particles passed trough a hole, which was covered by a silver foil. On the other side of the hole there was a shade covered by zinc sulphide. Rutherford observed little flashes on the shade. When he added nitro oxygen into the vacuum, the number of the flashes grew. This phenomenon was caused by alpha-particles which separated some qualified particles from nitrogen atoms. These particles were protons

The electron was found by an English scientist J.J. Thomson

Ernest Rutherford is generally credited with the discovery of the proton.

J.J. Thomson is credited with having first measured the charge/mass ratio and is considered to be the discoverer of the electron.
