I've been looking at job descriptions that that is one of the most common "benefit" companies list. Is that the indirect way of saying commission?

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career.

Competitive salary has nothing to do with benefits. What it means is that the employer will pay a wage that is roughly identical to what another employer will pay for a similar job. In other words, a paralegal at law firm A makes very much the same salary as a paralegal at firm B. The two firms pay 'Competitive Salaries.' The same applies to commissions. If someone sell widgets for Widgets, Inc. and receives 10%, he/she will get the same thing at Amalgamated Widgets. Hope that's what you're looking for.

When a company mentions having a competitive salary they are implying that the salary that they are offering is comparable to the compensation and benefits offered by other companies in the same field.

A competitive salary is one that keeps running and training until it wins, lol.

Seriously, though, the answer varies. Usually it doesn't mean a commision, just that they pay well for the type of work that's being done as compared to others in the field.

Sounds like they're talking about the benefits package such as health insurance and life insurance...meaning that theirs is standard...to know if the salary is competitive or not we'd need to know what type of job it was, what does the description say?

No, it's an indirect way of saying they pay about 50 cents more than someone else pays for the same job. LOL

Competitive Salery means, a reasonable Salary. Ie they give a reasonable salary for that particular Posting. If you compare that salary to other company's, it will defenetly match with others.

It means they pay the same amount everyone else in their area pays for someone with the job that you're trying to get and your qualifications.
