Did you hold down the reset button after you put in the new battery? If so, just go ahead and toss it and get a new one.

I had that happen too and it turned out the smoke detector required a specific brand of batteries. They had to be Ever Ready or something, but I discovered this after reading the imprinted instructions for use printed on the smoke detector itself.

hold down the test button, if that does not work open it up to see if it is wired correctly if it is wired electrically as well, because it may have a bad connection and it will beep to tell you that it is just working on the battery and no current. If this does not work buy a new one.

Clean or change the filter and reset the unit. If still the same, consult a qualified technician to have a look at it.

Kill it.
Or call you local fire department and ask them - those firemen know things about smoke detectors.
