Currently taking only 2.5mg of lexapro (normal dose is 10mg) Doc says the 2.5mg isn't enough to even do anything, but if I take a higher amount, I'm just stoned and if I don't take any, anxiety symptoms come back. Wanting to ttc soon, wondering if buspar would be safer to take during pregnancy and how does the buspar work? Anything like the lexapro? I know gyn says it's ok to be on the lexapro, has other patients on it. (risk vs. benefits) but lexapro is a class C and buspar is a class B. So if there is something safer I should try, I might want to do that. I wish I didn't have to take an anti-anxiety. But I am a better person with the medicine. Thanks for any replies!

I took Buspar without realizing I was pregnant and it made my heart race horribly. There are a lot of medications that cannot be taken while pregnant and you need to make a pre-conception appointment with your OB/GYN to discuss this with them. Also NEVER trust any info on medications during pregnancy from someone that has no medical training or info from the internet. Only your doctor can tell you what you can take.

There have been no studies done to confirm that Lexapro is safe to use in pregnant women. Therefore, Lexapro should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the unborn child. Be sure to talk to your doctor about this important decision.

Buspirone (Buspar)is an antianxiety medication that works by stimulating serotonin type 1A receptors on nerves thereby altering the chemical messages that nerves transmit to each other. It is indicated for the management of anxiety disorders or for the short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. There are no adequate studies of buspirone in pregnant women. However, studies in animals suggest no important effects on the fetus. Buspirone therefore can be used in pregnancy if the physician feels that it clearly is necessary.

If you haven't started your pregnancy, you might want to go back to Lexapro until the 20th week, that's when it does harm (if it does). SSRIs are associated with a 6-fold increase in the risk (which is normally 1/1000) of persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns, when used past the 20th week. Otherwise switch buspirone, it is safe (though of no use for depression).

I was on Lexapro and got switched as soon as I did more research on it and pregnancy... but I also was on 20 mg and needed more... at 2.5 I can't see it being THAT bad!

here was the BEST link I found about Lexapro and how it affects pregnancy and the baby after birth!

I would try taking wellbutrin. My doctor says that there are less side effects for mother and baby. I started taking wellbutrin XL 150 mg (which is the lowest dose, it dosed different that most antidepressents) when I was 28 weeks and I feel 100% better. Now that I am 38 weeks my doctor has increased my dosage to 300 mg to help with post partum depression. Wellbutrin is an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety med. I was suffering more from anxiety than depression as well. Good Luck sweetie I hope you find what is best for you and your little one!

i have read that there are signs of withdrawal from babies at birth ... much like a baby born while the mother takes illegal drugs (OF COURSE NO WHERE NEAR AS SEVERE... just stating that their are signs of withdrawal) i read that in Newsweek! i to suffer from depression... but i have weened myself off med SEVERAL times in my life and i have chosen to take no meds while trying to conceive, and hopefully (fingers crossed) when i get pregnant i won't take meds for anxiety and depression... i think i can do it as long as i am so focused on baby stuff! :)

BEST of luck in your decision... don't let ANYONE tell you what is best for you to do for yourself! every one of us is different and handle anxiety and depression and stresses differently!
