The sun formed from other dead exploded stars and the hydrogen gas that makes up the majority of our galaxy. This material clumped together from gravity and compression waves from the spiral arms of our galaxy, until it ignited from it's own pressure and our sun was born. Some of this material stayed in orbit around our new born sun and eventually clumped together to form the planets.
