Yes, although now I wish I didn't. Anyway, here is a transcript breaking the meaning down:

"Jerry: Alright, this song actually came in as a request. Though it seemed to make complete sense to me, I decided since our listeners didn't see the obvious story in the song we could help them out. Now I'm only going to explain the first half of my argument to see what you, Darryl, are thinking.

This song is possibly easier for me to understand because I've done some time in Portland... Not that I want to get into my issues with the town in general, but this is what the song is about. This guy has WAY too much free time on his hands and decides he wants to be a woman. That's what it comes down to. He is so obviously a transvestite wanna-be... And I quote... "... I had so much time to sit and think about myself and there she was." He found the woman inside of himself. So, essentially that is what I get out of the song... Darryl, what dark place does this song take YOU?

Darryl: Jerry, while I don't mind our readers working out their personal problems in the comments area, I don't think it's at all professional for you to use this forum to vent your hatred of the fine city of Portland. You're right in saying this song has an obvious meaning, but you follow that observation with a remarkable twisting of the lyrics. This song can easily be understood by picturing the singer as a big Tom cat. He's completely selfish and thinks all females are for his taking. He sees a new one and is looking forward to the conquest. That's it. No deep perverted meanings here.

Jerry: First of all, any time and any place is a good place and time for me to vent my hatred of the Beaver Town (Portland). I can remotely see some of the lyrics making you think it's about a big Tom cat, but I'm not following the whole 'sex and candy' part. How would you tie those lyrics into your meaning? I happen to have a very good explanation of those lyrics, BUT, it would be highly unprofessional for me to even try to explain them on this site. Anyway, back to my interpretation. The singer is actually more of a man that is a wanna-be transvestite lesbian. He obviously finds females attractive, but he also wants to be one. He's dressing up in women's clothing, sitting in his chair, looking into a mirror and getting his rocks off. He is also feeling guilty about it. And I quote... "Who's that lounging in my chair? Who's that casting devious stares in my direction? Mama this surely is a dream." He's asking rhetorical questions to himself and thinking of what his mother would think of this. However, by the end of the song he realizes this is who he is so he says, "Yeah mama this must be my dream."

Darryl: Okay, I think we've finally determined who's mind is the most twisted. Not only does your interpretation of this song show your dementia, but your linking of transvestitism, Portland, and your hatred of the city shows a disturbing phobic tendency. While I'm not a big fan of transvestites I have no problem with them doing their thing as long as I don't have it shoved in my face. And I certainly wouldn't associate Portland with transvestitism. Lesbianism maybe, but not transvestitism.

Anyway, the song is a simple statement of lust. Two of the most basic human urges are those of sex and sweets, thus the title. Simple as that.

Jerry: Oh come on... I'm as open minded as the next person, which is why I am aware that all this is going on in this town. Just because Lesbians take the spotlight most of the time doesn't mean there isn't an underground of transvestitism throughout the town. As for not having a problem with it unless it's shoved (I would have used the word thrown, but who's the sick one now?) in your face, that is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. This song is doing nothing but throwing it in our faces. You just fail to see the obvious. This song IS about fulfilling urges, just not the basic human ones...

Darryl - Summary: Your social life sounds...interesting. I'm glad, though, that you at least don't consider dressing up in womens' clothes a basic human urge. Speaking of urges, I have an urge to go wash my hands with that strong soap I used after your comments on "Kiss From a Rose". I'm sure the readers have long since seen the light on this song. Until next time..."

Miss Bossy,

Thank you for your question.

"Sex & Candy" is the first single released by Marcy Playground from their self titled debut album Marcy Playground. It was released in 1997. "Sex and Candy" was a large hit in 1997, spending a then-record fifteen weeks at number one on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart. It also went top 10 in Australia.

Unfortunately, they haven't been able to repeat its success leading them to be perceived as one-hit wonders.

Judging by the lyrics, the song is about seeing an attractive woman.
