The author of the Sherlock Holmes stories was, in real life, a medical doctor. He wrote himself into the stories as Doctor Watson. But it was his vast knowledge of medicine, of the investigation process, of general information, that allowed the fictional Holmes to solve the crimes.

Watson (aka Arthur Conan Doyle) was the real brains behind Holmes.

Hercule Poirot television series was a good example of this dynamic for me. Sorry ..never read sherlock stories. I would imagine that being either of the two would be equally exciting...if you aren't running from bullets.

It would be nice to have Holmes brilliance but he was also a drug addicted, ego-maniacal woman hater. I'll take Watson.
