"I just felt I had been on the show for a nice amount of time. I definitely wanted to leave “Saturday Night Live” at a time when I still enjoyed doing the show. I didn't have a supreme confidence that I would be immediately successful after leaving the show, but I just knew it was the right time to test myself and get out there and try other things."

It was a Blue Oyster Cult tune ("You can never have enough cowbell") I think it had Christopher Walken as guest-host. It may be found on Vol 1 on Will Ferrells Greatest SNL hits

His Four years were up and that is the longest that anybody wants to stay on the show. He said when he left it was like graduation day for him.
