I am leaving home for the first time to go 700 miles away to college. I am very excited, but at the same time very sad and scared ( I have broken down and cried a couple times in private, and i know i will when my parents leave me) and im not the type of person who ever cries, and i am a male. i have thought about staying behind and going to college while living at home at a community college, even though i am only a week away from moving in. I love my parents very much, and i just dont know if i can make it without them. I know even if i do stay for a couple years, it will still be just as hard to leave them. Anyway i dont really have anybody i can talk to about this, because i dont want my parents to know how scared and sad i am...this is kind of embarrassing, but i just need someone to help me. thanks.

These days it's refreshing to hear such tenderness towards parents. Try to remember that one way you can show your parents what a good job they did is to show how you can stand on your own two feet. Your parents job was to raise you to the best of their ability, so that you can learn to take care of yourself, be independent, be strong. Much as they love you, too, it's also nice for them to have some freedom now. By being self sufficient, you release them from the responsibility of having to take care of you, having to worry about you (although they will for the rest of your life!). It is a gift you can give them. Even though it's hard for you, and will be also hard for your parents, your relationship will be stronger by making this break. Delaying it, by staying close to home, will just make it harder, so I say, go off to college and find out about the world, so that you have some great experiences to share with your parents! Good luck!

Not to worry young man, You are feeling the same way 99.9% of us have when leaving home for the first time.
This is something that you MUST do, Leaving the nest is a right of passage that we all must go through in order to achieve the Independence that will be needed to become an adult.
It will be scary and very difficult but after you get going it will become easier and more likable.

You should take this step even if it's hard. It'll be part of growing up and you'll have a wonderful story to tell. Any college you go, you're going to be making new friends and starting a new life. Just try it. If it doesnt work, you can always transfer back. I went out of state my first year and love it, but decided to go back home to a community college. I dont regret anything. Dont be afraid to take risks!

It is normal to be apprehensive about such a big event. If you are staying in student accommodation there will be lots of other people just like you who want to make friends. College is an exciting adventure. You will soon make new friends and discover an exciting new world. There is also the telephone.

Get a grip!
Man up!
Stop crying like a lil wuss!
YOUR GONNA HAVE GOOD TIMES 700 MILES FROM YOUR MOMMA AND DADDY. I GUARANTEE THAT. ITS WORTH IT, FOR THE EXPERIENCE AT THE LEAST. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE, GO CATCH YOUR FIRST LAY, AND QUIT ACTING LIKE A LIL CRYBABY. geez!
And once you get a dose of college life, I promise, you will not miss your parents for one second. You are gonna thank them for giving you the opportunity to get educated far from home. You will get educated in 2 ways - school and life. in school its all textbook crap but stick to your books. in life you will meet new homies, and chics, and you will have good times. Work hard, play hard!

take it from me, get out of town, the temptation of dropping out is too great if your home with all your old friends. Its time to grow up and meet some people that have the same goals as you.
