it is there so that energy will be captured by the pond. when you open the door, it lets in the fresh energy into the house.
however, note that these energies can be good or bad. this is what practitioners get paid for.
there is another practice that when an entrance is tilted to a certain orientation to a pond at the entrance. you will draw an abundance of wealth luck. its called the castle gate theory

Chinese believes water in feng shui means wealth and it can block away bad luck. So a pond can be a meaning of attracting wealth to flow in or to block the bad luck to come in or both.

You have to go a little deeper then that. You have to figure out which direction your house faces and then you make a wheel over your house and figure out what section your entrance lies in.
