I was installing a new stereo in my car and when I was putting the ground wire to the ground strap, my interior lights went out. If I turned on the ignition, they would come back on. Basically nothing "power" works unless I don't have the ignition on. (Lights, power locks, etc). I checked the fuses and none of them appeared to be blown. Also, the stereo doesn't work, but all of the wires are connected correctly, so I'm not sure if it has something to do with the lights not working or not.

I have installed several stereos before and this has never happened. What is this adaptor kit that you speak of? Do you mean a wiring harness? If that is the case then it was already being used.

I'm looking for someone with an explanation of what could be wrong, not people simply saying "that it needs to be fixed" I KNOW it needs to be fixed, but if it's something simple, then I'd like to do it myself.

Geez people, have common courtesy.

Yes, I'm sure it was the ground wire. It was black and had a c connector at the end of it.

depending on the yr or the car some have a fuse able link in the wire. it is for in case there is a power serge the link will blow to protect the wire and keep it from catching fire if you can give me a make /model/and year i can get you an answer with in 24 hrs. and it is very important to connect the memory wire to a hot wire that is on when the key is off you may have spliced into a wire that is for the lights and you need to find out which one and use a 12volt tester (very important tool when installing stereos) to find a hot wire when car is off, then you need a hot wire for when the key is on (for red wire from stereo) and you can ground the stereo to a scew that is in a metal part of the car (this i have found is the safest cause your not tapping into some other wire that you don't know what it goes to) or use your tester and hook it to a bear metal part of the car (like a screw that you can use for your ground wire) and with the key on test some wire that don't make the light turn on. But be care full cause you should turn on everything to check and see if that light comes on when you turn on something else, cause you can do more damage (if you don't check)and you might want to check out and see if the stereo still works it could have been damaged. Try that, but really try to use the old stereo wires if you can. Good Luck!

The best thing i can recommend is to take it to an audio place that specializes in those kind of things and get it looked at. It would be worth your money if it is that big of a deal to you.

the only thing I can think of is you have one of the power wires hooked to the dimmer circuit in the original wires
