Better for whom? Everyone is different and what is best for one person may not be best for someone else. Much depends on what you want from your boating experience. Location, experience, finances, family commitments and available time are all factors to be considered.
I suggest that you meet some people that have boats, poke around the waterfront and marinas. Try to find out what really interests you, cruising, skiing, racing - either power or sail?
A small, stable outboard motor boat is probably the fastest and easiest way to get out on the water. There's not too much to learn and is basically a turn-key operation. However, this is quite an expensive proposition both to buy, maintain and operate.
A small sailing boat is another option. However, you will need to learn how to sail, and include some form of sailing school or instruction which will take time and there is expense involved. Small sailboats are generally cheaper to buy, operate and maintain than a similar sized powerboat.
Sailboats will generally take you anywhere a power-boat can go only differently. Power is noisier than sail. Sail is slower than power. Operating costs of sail is less than power.
Hope this helps and good luck

It depends on what you really like to do. I think sailboats are a lot more work, but then again there's something about skating on top of the water with just wind and sails... Motor boats, nothing better for fishing.

Sail boats are for me because I like to enjoy having the wind move me quietly across the water. Then there is the fuel cost of a motor boat as well as the environmental impact.

inboard, twins, diesel....torque with the right wheel, power and dependability. A 50 " sportfish can make close to 50 knots with more then enough dig with twin 1100hp turbos. I just don't think you can get enough out of outboards. Not for the weight and hull on a 40+ foot boat. a 30+ foot center console with trips or quads then yes outboards..JMO
