I don't know that you will be able to make him understand the reasoning for this right now. Just the fact that his father is willing to give him up over dollars shows there are some serious issues on that end of things.

Be supportive and try to be patient and understanding during the times that he has moments surrounding the change and loss. As he gets older hopefully he will understand the reasons.

One thing you may do is find one last thing that he is giving up that he really would like to take on the move. Either allow him to take one more thing or if you can, suprise him with it as you are getting ready to start your trip.

It sounds as though both you and your ex-husband need to examine your own values and morals before you start questioning those of your son. He has a father who is letting him leave to rid himself of a financial obligation and a mother who is taking him away from everything he's known. How can you expect a child to care about the emotional aspect, rather than the materialistic one, when his parents are setting the example. Kids are little sponges, they soak up their environment and act out what they learn. Apparently he's grown accustomed to the attachment he has with his material things and it's a shame he hasn't grown attached to his parents.

make sure that he gets to pick out a few of his favorite things to take. being 11 he probably knows its best but still can't help feeling sad just like yo are right now.

I AM SURE THAT HE HASN'T EXPRESSED OTHER CONCERNS OUT OF RESPECT FOR YOU. I AM SURE HE HAS FRIENDS AND HE STILL LOVES HIS DAD. AFTER THE NEWNESS OF THE ADVENTURE WEARS OFF, HE WILL NEED A LOT OF NEW FRIENDS (AT A VERY MINIMUM), AND NEW TOYS, A CELL PHONE TO CALL DAD WITH, AND MOSTLY, ALL OF YOUR LOVE AND SUPPORT.

depends on which three state you're talking... if it's like washington to arizona (through oregon/cali) that'd suck. but if they are say rhode island and massachuttes from hew hampshire, tell him to suck it up, it's not soo bad.

just buy him a gameboy or something.

tough one....remember how you were at 11... the world is only as large as what you see..... really, the only thing you can do is continue to be "mom".... as long as he has your love, everything else will fall in place........
