Okay, so basically here's the situtation.
We have to move in a few weeks to an apartment that doesn't allow pets, and I have 2 cats and 2 little gerbils. I don't want to get rid of them, and I don't know anyone close enough to me that I trust. My dad won't let me keep them over at his house, because his cats will fight with him...I really want to keep them somehow.
I'm 11 years old, so I have no control to weither we're moving into a apartment that allows pets or not. They already told me they can't afford that, We can't sneak the cats into the apartment, way too risky. And I don't really want to give them to a no- kill shelter. It breaks my heart I have to give them up, I'll do anything at this point to keep them.

Okay, you people are starting to upset me. My parent's are CRUEL or anything like that, we can't afford pets, we cant afford the place we're living in because she recently got a divorce and my dad isn't paying her money. My parents bought my pets for me, (cats and gerbils) knowing that I would be responsible. I am a very resopnsible pet owner. I care for my pets, and I make sure they have enough attention/food every day.

For being 11 years old, you have some really good diction.

Sorry kid. There's really no solution. You may be able to keep the gerbils... the cats may need to find a new home. It sucks - but there's really nothing more you can do.

Finding a new home for the cats is better than taking them to a shelter. Also, see if there are cat rescues in your area. They specialize in taking in cats... and finding new, good homes for them.

Good luck.

So sorry your parents were not concerned about your feelings or the welfare of your pets to find an apartment that accepts them. Unfortunately it isn't always possible to do this as some places charge high deposits and monthly fees to cover possible pet damage.
I don't have any ideas for you. I can assure you that a rescue group that accepts responsibility for your cats will do everything they can to adopt them to a good family. I hope that if you choose this option, your family will remember to offer a financial donation to the organization. They are taking on the responsibility that your parents are unable or unwilling to fulfill themselves, thus it is only fair to assist them with the costs of caring for the cats until they are adopted out.
I think you are fine with the hamsters in the apartment. Most management companies don't consider pets confined to cages as a problem since they won't soil the carpets.
It is important that people remember when they take on the responsibility of a pet that it is a long-term comittment that can last up to 15 years. Far too many animals end up in shelters every year because people are moving?! Just be thankful the apartment complex takes children.
Good Luck.

If you have the choice to give them to a "No-kill" shelter, that is wonderful, because if your family can't find homes for the cats, the shelter can.

Most rental policies that say no pets will allow fish, small rodents in cages, birds, etc; just not cats and dogs.

Talk to your mom about that and try to comfort each other through this hard time. Not only are you moving, you are losing two babies. This can be very stressful for you and the rest of the family. Stick together and show your love and patience for each other.

From what you say, I am sure your mom (or whoever lives with you) will make the right decision for the cats.

I got my dog from the Humane Society. Be sure if you do leave them somewhere, that it's a "NO KILL" shelter. Go to Petfinder.org and put in your state where the link for shelters is. Some places have the ability to foster small furry animals such as gerbils. Now you won't get your pets back, but you will be handing them over to quailfied caregivers who truly have the animal's best interest at heart. Some local humane societies post success stories and you may get to see who has your pet and hear how happy that are with their newest family member.
I'm hooking you up with the link to TATUM's success story.

I hope you can see her and gain some inspiration from our happiness. Absolute best of luck!!! If you do choose to take my advice, have a clear conscience. You are still required to do what is best for the entire family...that includes you beloved pets. They will adjust to a new person. And some shelters require people keep pets indoors only. That would keep them from encountering traffic and beastly other animals that could hurt them. Pray about "the soultion" and it will come to you...I swear!

Okee Dokee - no probs - this is what you do.

Have you noticed that every now and again the local tv station or newspaper will come up with a sob story with photographs about this really, really ugly dog that's been in the kennels for yonks that nobody wants because it's so ugly?

Within 10 minutes the telephones of the kennels are jammed with people offering it a home.

Are you getting the idea?

You write a letter to your local newspaper telling how your are being forced to move and you have the sweetest pussycats in the whole damn world and you gotta get rid of 'em and you're just going to die and you can't go on through life anymore and if there's a God please let him do something now, and if anyone out there can offer them a home (and they must stay together because they love each other so much) you will give them all the money that you earn from your newspaper round each week and please would it be all right if I come to visit them every Monday after school? . . . . . . you'll have 100s of phone calls offering them homes in magic castles and fairy princess palaces and the tv people will come round and show you visiting them and everyone will go "Ahhhhh"

and that's what you do.

I would try to find a good home between now and then. Make sure you screen possible homes. Don't be afraid to ask questions, ask about their vet (call their vet), or write up a contract. Find a adoption questionare on a rescue website to use as a guide.
If you can't find a home in time then a shelter will find them a good home. Just make sure that they do home checks and won't just give the cats to anyone.
Good luck!

I there a possibility that you enquire whether any other apartment is up for your choosing? Try to find one that allows it. Or ask your parents regarding whether do they allow pets or not. Why worry for things you dun know. Get more information and try to find way out. Theres always a silver lining among dark clouds.

you can find an organization that puts them in foster homes until they are adopted. and they do heavy screening on who adopts. many home visits before the pets are allowed to go home for good with them. you can ask the local shelter for a list of these organizations. good luck kid. you sound really responsible for your age.
