By the smell of course. Some pest control services offer dead animal removal services for a reasonable fee. They can find the creature or cause and remove and deodorize the area.

well if it's a dead animal, I could lend you my dog. She can sniff out anything dead with in a 1/2 mile of my house. Gross HUH?? I suggest a dog.

if you're near a university, call and see if the pre-med section has any tools in forensics that they hire out?
there's a tool that picks up on smells and will help you ferret out where the smell is.....they you can go from there with the clean up.

Follow your nose, it always knows... or hire someone who has bloodhounds.. or just bring any old dog in, theyre famous for finding stinky stuff

find someone with a very sensative nose. it is possible that it's in the walls, and that can get messy.
