Technically the stick shift is 'better' if you're talking mechanics. But if you're talking ease of driving, automatic is better. Automatic just might be safer because the driver is free to focus on the traffic and not on shifting. After years of having a stick, I've just switched to an automatic. I love its ease, and the gas consumption difference is slight.
Go with what suits your driving style.

There are two reasons why stick shifts can get better mileage than automatics: - there's no torque converter in a stick shift, so power transmission from the engine to the wheels is more efficient - a human being can intelligently choose the gear that will give the best mileage The latter point is the problem, though: not all drivers shift gears in a mileage-maximizing way, so the advantage of a stick shift can be lost or diminished.

It depends on the model year. An expert driver with a stick shift can exceed the mileage that would be obtained from an older car with an automatic. An expert driver with a stick shift can get very close to, and maybe even exceed but I doubt it, the mileage of an automatic transmission car built in the last few years. An inexpert driver or an expert who is not carefully focusing on mileage will never exceed the mileage of an automatic. Automatic transmissions don't daydream.

The "Stick Shift" is a working drivers gearbox, And the "Automatic Gearbox" is the lazy persons way of driving.

And before anyone disputes me, you can ask yourself some simple questions first.

1. Do I concentrate more on my driving, or on whats going on outside of the vehicle when I'm driving an automatic?
2. Is it easier to put my make-up on when I'm driving an automatic? *Not nessarily aimed at just the ladies*
3. Am I even concerned about being in the correct gear when making a manuver in fast moving traffic when I'm driving an automatic?
4. Do I get angry when the car won't start because it's still in gear from the last time the wife/girlfriend used the car and I didn't bother checking it first when I'm driving an automatic?

Thats just four quick questions to be going along with.

And I am sure that you could come up with dozens more when you day dreaming driving down the road instead of concentrating on what you should be doing when your driving an automatic.

one isn't really any better than the other. It is a matter of preference and use for the vehicle. If you drive in stop and go traffic a lot, stick is a pain. if you like performance driving, stick is more fun. Automatic is better if you just want to put it in gear and not think about it. Sticks can be a little cheaper, but you have to replace the clutches periodically.

the better is the stick shift,,is is more dependable,,and last virtually a life time if taken care of,,i prefer them over an automatic,,automatics are expensive to work on,,as for a stick shift,,the only thing that ever goes out on them is the clutch,,and there not to expensive to replace,,but usually last at least a 125 thousand miles,,sometimes longer,,i hope this help,s some.

I like automatics...easier to drive. Now if you live in California, driving a stick shift can be a lot of work! Too much stop and go traffic.
