Use a pre wash - Shout, OxyClean etc.
How did you get the tomato stain on it in the first place?
I surely wouldn't give him ANY money for the shirt. Accidents happen.

Take a couple of capfuls of bleach and mix it with equal parts of liquid detergent, after that dab it onto the stains. After you have done that then toss it into the washing machine that's filled and ready to go. Biz is also a great thing to add to your laundry to get it extra white. I have never had any problems when I do it this way. The key is to get in diluted as soon as possible.
Tide clorox and biz and there is nothing I can't get out except for the red dirt from Moab Utah. I don't know what it is about that dirt but it stains everything.

Soak in water softening conditioner.
ie; White King Conditioner
It's like a powdered soap, but its not soap.
It work great. You can also use it to soak pots and pans. You won't have to work so hard to clean up messes. I've also used a solution to mop the kitchen and bathroom floor. Works great on alot of stuff, even grease on the garage floor. Doesn't take much powder mixed with water. It's kind of like TSP

Get a Clorox stain stick and "paint" the stain with it. Then soak it for a few hours and wash. The stain should come out.

Soak it in Oxyclean for a few day to a week. I use it for my toddler's clothes and it works best when you soak it. You might also try using the bleach pen just before washing too.
