Every time I have gotten an abnormal pap smear, I have been told to return for a biopsy, which is when the doctor takes a snip of your uterus lining. They then test it for cancer. Do NOT wait six months. The reason your pap smear came back abnormal is that you have pre-cancerous cells. Waiting six months is too long. Trust me on this. I have had many abnormal paps and I have had numerous biopsies. For about 3 years in a row I went to the doctor every three months for a pap smears. It sucked but at least I knew that if I DID have cancer, it was in the early, early, stages.
Again, do not wait on this. Your doctor is being too lax on this. Cancer is deadly, so please do not take any chances. Get another pap, or a biopsy right away!

This is what I got off of the site below....
An abnormal Pap test shows that cells in the cervix have changed from a normal to an abnormal appearance. About 5% to 10% of women will have an abnormal Pap test, but only a few of these abnormal results are likely to lead to cervical cancer. Abnormal cell changes of the cervix rarely cause symptoms, so it is important to have regular Pap tests to find cell changes.
Many abnormal Pap tests are caused by infections or inflammation and will not lead to cancer.
There are several choices for treatment for minor cervical cell changes. Treatments for moderate to severe cell changes destroy or remove the abnormal tissue.
***So I'm thinking doc said to come back in 6 months beacuse they want to see it's just an infection or if you really do have cervical cancer

There is a type of virus out there that gives an abnormal pap smear result. They bring you back for another test, to determine if they'll need to freeze off any cells that could become cancerous. It is fairly common, IIRC, and not generally a cause for alarm. I'm sure someone else will have already posted the name of it.
Also, it could be almost anything else.

Go back in 6 months! I was diagnosed with mio-displasia, which is a weird pap smear result... but everything was ok in the end... I had just had my youngest daughter, and it seems that giving birth or other stresses for a woman can give a false reading on a pap smear. Be smart, and go back when they say to, and everything should be ok. Good luck!!

that happened to me. it just means that there were some abnormal cells that are not usually found there. but this happens often and as long as your fine the second go around theres nothing to worry about. but if it is abnormal again you may have to get a very advanced pap smear where they take a microscope and see if there are any abnormal cells and if they find any they will freeze them to kill them.

Please, please, PLEASE get more detailed information from your doctor. There's no need to get all worked up from answers you may get from people through this site (you know that's what will happen). You're going back in 6 months for a repeat pap? Good, but first, ask for more specifics. This is YOUR body we're talking about, so don't be afraid to ask!

USUALLY MEANS YOU ONLY HAVE A SIMPLY YEAST INFECTION THAT CAN EASILY BE TREATED. SOME WOMEN GET THEM OFTEN, SOME HARDLY EVER. I ONCE HAD AN OLDER DOCTOR TO TELL ME TO QUIT USING DOUCHES. I THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE SO DIRTY AND UNCLEAN!!! BUT HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT THE SCENTS, ADDITIVES & SUCH IN THEM ACTUALLY CAUSE WOMEN TO HAVE INFECTIONS AND A DISCHARGE AND THAT IF WE WERE SUPPOSE TO USE THOSE THINGS THAT THE GOOD LORD WOULD HAVE PUT AN AUTOMATIC WASHER IN THERE WHEN HE MADE US. HE TOLD ME WHEN TAKING A SHOWER, JUST TO SOAP UP AND SPRAY UPWARD THERE AND IT WOULD BE ENOUGH TO CLEANSE THE AREA. I TOOK HIS ADVICE AND HAD NO MORE PROBLEMS WITH INFECTIONS & SUCH.
