The Internet has a lot of Forums. These are chat rooms devoted to a specific subject. Go to the the Yahoo search line and enter the phrase "forum and " then enter the subject that you are interested in. You can find a forum on almost any subject. Most forums require you to register, but usually all you need is a valid e-mail address. Once you have registered you can log in and see what other people are saying. Don't forget to book mark the forum's home page so you can return later. If you see a comment you like or don't then you can post a response. Do this enough and people will start to talk with you. Typically everyone's e-mail addresses (and user names) are posted so you can send comments directly to a person. That will let you strike up a conversation by e-mail. If you like the person you can even exchange Instant Messenger addresses and correspond that way.

Just remember that everyone on the Internet lies to some extent so never give out any personal information, you don't know who is really on the other end of that e-mail address.

of course be careful who you talk to online, its real dangerous. especially being 13, the internet is where the freaks come out to play lol. of course myspace rules the world, but i hate it. I use Bebo all the time, it is just like myspace only easier to use and less spam. you can go thru ur own school, add friends, or find new friends. i have some friends that i never really talked to, but then i got on bebo and learned more about them, and i have bonded with a few a lot more than ever before. i found out we have a lot in common and it really helps to form tight friendships.

This answer is for you and your parents to read since you are 13 years old. I understand you wanting to socialize over the internet, but here's some things I want you to read and when you start your internet socializing, store them in your memory for quick reference. Things can quickly get out of hand as 13 year olds are innocent and trust quickly. The latest research says 20% of teenagers have been solicited for sex on the internet, so here's my list:

1. Never ever use or tell your birth name in a chat room. Always use your screen name, which has nothing to do with you or your environment. And don't give in if you are pressured by a person on line. If you have a password, have one with a small letter, a capital letter, a number, a punctuation mark, a dollar sign, or one of the other signs above the numbers. It's really harder to decode a password if it has those different letters, numbers, and things in it. And change the password every 30 days. Don't give it to any friends. Well meaning friends have accidentally told another person's password and caused many problems for the family of the child with the password.
2. Never ever give your city or state you live in, your school name, it's address, your phone number, the sports you play, or your email address. Also never tell them hints to help them figure it out. That screams a potentially dangerous reason for them to be talking to you. A person with computer knowledge can search and find your home address if your give any info about your home computer. And again, don't give in if somebody tells you they are innocent and won't hurt you.
3. Don't believe the ages that people tell you they are. Believe it or not, there are perverts out of prison or who haven't gone yet who are 50 years old pretending to be 12 and wanting to meet you someplace. There are also all ages of people pretending to be 12. If they are pretending, they are potentially dangerous. They first want to just be friendly like a 12 year old and gradually gain more trust from you till you want to meet them somewhere at which time they tell you you can't tell your parents about meeting him. Don't fall for anything that people tell you you must hide from your parents. They are up to no good.
4. Establish good boundaries from the beginning. This will deter perverts from seeking you out as an easy one to con. Don't tell too much personal stuff about yourself and if one on the site comes across as sexual, it's time to get rid of that person.
5. Know that you cannot believe anything anybody tells you. It is just like picking up a Los Angeles phone book, opening to a page, running your finger down the page, and landing on a name to call. You know NOT who the person is.
6. Tell your parents if anything happens that makes you feel uncomfortable. It can be a feeling of something doesn't sound quite right or feel right to you. You parents should call the police if anything inappropriate happens to you. It's a felony today to threaten anyone's life on the internet and there's also a lot of laws involving children under 18.

There are far too many horror stories happening every day about perverts meeting 12 year olds, boys and girls, on the internet, only to eventually convince them to meet them in person to have sex and actually murder them. You can have a good safe internet experience but use your intellect and don't be conned by
anybody online. It is not as safe as it looks. Here are some internet sites I found for you to read and for your parents to also read. They need to participate in this with you, for they are responsible for you till you are 18.

Why don't you just get IM?

You can create an account at Yahoo 360, and your friends can post comments and such there. It isn't instant, but it's something.

Same goes for My Space.

It's better if you socialize with people your own age. They would have much more in common with you and it would be safer.
