House

It rather depends on your personal circumstance. If for example you reside in a small town and have employment and shopping within easy walking or bicycle riding distance a car is not an asset. If you live in New York City or Chicago where there is excellent public transportation, a car is more of a libility than an asset. In those two situation and perhaps others that I can not think of at the moment, a house would be a greater asset than a car.

If on the other hand your place of employment is beyond walking or bicycle riding distance and there is no public transportation available, then a car is an absolute must.

house/lot does not depreciate as a car does. the life of a car is approximately 5 years. the house/lot's value appreciates over time. plus, you don't have to pay rent to anybody if you own the house. in the long run, you benefit from the house.
