the best way to find out how well your son is doing ins algebra is to tell him you don't remember your algebra and ask him can he please explain it to you...

Get him to show how he worked out some of his algebra and in that way if he succeeds in showing you the workings and making you understand the work.... then you KNOW he does know his stuff... and you give him a great boost of confidence because he got to TEACH you something for a change and you took it seriously....

Most text books have online sites that provide questions and answers. Some provide mini tests to help mastery of concepts, and even outlines and notes for work in each chapter. Look within the cover of the book to find it. Maybe you could practice up a little bit so that you would know what he is doing, and help go over homework with him and both of you could input on answers until he has comprehension of the subject matter.

I like to go to the local community college and check out any tutoring programs they may have.
Relax Dad, your son's grades should let you know and you can speak to his teachers. Most teachers like interactive parents.

why check it before he hands it in? just check that it is done
let him get things wrong and learn from it

check things over after graded and if they don't hand them, have the teacher check on it or give you answers after the fact

What if instead you asked the teacher to let you know how your child is doing with the homework?
