I have 3 kids and soon to have hardwood floors (yes hardwood 3/4" naildown). I really want an American Bulldog but I also want her to be an inside pet. I know that my kids will have the dog running and stuff on the floor. Is that something to worry about or is that the beauty of hardwood?

If you have a large dog on hardwood floors, yes, it's going to get scratched.Depending on the finish will determine how bad. If you are buying a prefinished hardwood, the finish is normally a lot stronger than one you would apply yourself. Also the stain. Natural floors will not show scratches as baddly as one that has a stain.

I don't think so. I never had a problem though I imagine it they are real wood you are applying a polyurethane coating or something of that nature on it and you may have to reapply with all the wear and tear but I did not have a problem with me 75# mutt. Urine is another thing but as long as you have a good sealant on their it should puddle up and not soak in (don't leave a wet rug on floor) and just wipe and sanitize it. P.s. installed top of the line vinyl flooring at Grandma's and sis's large dog trashed it with scratches. So wood flooring should be a great choice for pets!

MY SISTER HAS TWO LITTLE DOGS AND WOOD FLOORS. THEY SLIP AND SLIDE WITH OR WITHOUT THEIR NAILS TRIMMED WHEN THEY PLAY. I CAN'T SEE THAT THEY DAMAGE THE FLOORS BUT IT DOES SCRATCH THE FINISH. UNLESS YOU CAN KEEP YOUR DOGGIE FROM RUNNING AND STOPPING SUDDENLY I WOULD IMAGINE THAT WOULD HAPPEN WITH YOU, TOO. MY SISTER LOVES HER DOGS AND FLOORS, IN SPITE OF THE SCRATCHES, AND THEY'RE NOT THAT BAD BUT YOU CAN SEE THEM. AND SHE HAS THE ORIGINAL FLOORS OF AN 80 YEAR OLD HOUSE. NOT THE HIGHT TEC STUFF THEY MAKE NOW. I'M PRETTY SURE YOU COULD TALK TO YOUR FLOOR GUY AND FIND THE BEST SURFACE FOR PETS. THEY MAKE A LOT OF GOOD QUALITY STUFF NOW THAT WILL TAKE A SERIOUS BEATING! DON'T GIVE UP UNTIL YOU CHECK IT OUT BETTER.

I grew up in a house with hardwood floors..was just my sister and I and our SMALL dog.. a miniature eskimo.. our floors were VERY scratched.. but we loved them for the sounds they made when we tapped danced wearing our moms heels..oh she was MAD at us..lol. Nice thing though, if they are the real wood.. sand em down.. and try again.. it is so worth it for the experience of a dog and kids together!

Did you have to give your landlord a pet deposit? If so I believe that your deposit should pay for the damages. As long as your land lord new about the dog your regular deposit might even take care of it. Unless the damage is excessive in that case as with any excessive damage you may do to a rental you are responsible for paying for it and your land lord can send you a bill that you must pay for the repairs. It would be better to repair it before you move so you can take care of it in the least expensive manner possible. Your land lord may not be so worried about how much the repairs are costing since your going to have to pay for it.

If it is not a prefinished wood then all I can say is good luck. The pre finished stuff has aluminum oxide in it and is very, very tough (15 to 25 year warranty). If it is going to be sanded and finished on the job, there is no way to suspend the aluminum oxide in the polyurethane and thus you resurface every so many years and it's not very tough. Consider what you put down before you get that pooch.

She won't due any worse damage then your 3 kids are going to do lol. Make sure you keep her nails trimmed and try to keep the rollerblades and running to a minimum. It will only look really horrible the first few scratches, but once it gets all over it helps make the floor look cozy.

big dogs will scratch up the beautiful wood. even little dogs will mess it up where the run and scratch when their nails are sharp i would maybe make the dog an additional little room like a little doggie house or something so she wouldnt mess up the floor. good luck
