Here's a question for all mathemiticians. On my stats, I have 145 total questions answered. Of those answers, 139 are marked "other" with 95% majority. The other 6 are marked "best" with 4%. That is only 99%. What happened to the other 1%? I'm sure this is obvious and starring me in the face, but I need a little help.

Yahoo has rounded incorrectly. They just truncate the percentage instead of rounding it properly.

139/145 = .95862... which should actually be rounded to 96%, not 95 %.

6/145 = .041379... which rounds to 4%.

If you round them properly, they will add up to 100%. Sometimes, even if you round properly, percentages don't add up to 100% exactly. This is called round off error.

It is rounding error. Yahoo takes as

139/145 = 0.958620.... = 95%
6/145 = 0.041379...... = 4%

Thus a total of 99%.

That's what rounding off can do to totals... In this case, the rounding is incorrect.

139/145 = 0.9586206... --> 96%
6/145 = 0.0413793... --> 4%

if u use a calculator and divide 139/145, ull get a long decimal. .9586206...
since ur rounding to the nearest percent, it would be round to 96% and 6/145 is .041379... and rounded to the nearest percent, it's 4%. 96% + 4% = 100% lol and im only 15

We're all in about the same boat, Munkees. It's just the system Answers' computer uses to figure these things and it lops off the decimal places after 2 places. The actual # should be 96%, as it's really 95.862%. No kidding. Try it on your calculator!

The 95% and the 4% are probably rounded numbers.

don't you have a calculator?
139/145 = 95.862%
6/145 = 4.138%
doesn't it total 100%?

The program that calculates the percentages does not round up.

Therefore, unless you are exactly a certain percentage, it will most likely appear to be off a percent.

This is what is called a "rounding error". They rounded off the numbers and now they don't add up to exactly 100%.

139/145 then % = 95.862068
6/145 %= 4.13793
adding them we get 99.99..
as 0.99....=1
as u have taken the round fig. , 1% is lost there
