I'm wondering if there is a virus or something that can make a hard drive disappear entirley. It is not only missing in Windows, but the computer cannot recognoze it at all, and this has recently happened with two of my hard drives. If there is something causing it, is there a way to fix it? Can a person somehow RESET the drive, like you can reset BIOS defaults? Or anything, the drive in question is a Maxtor 40 gig, seems to be in perfect shape, but suddenly disappeared. Did you change your IDE device configuration recently?

First of all, I would check to make sure you have the hard drive jumpered correctly on the IDE channel. The "master" device should be located at the end of the cable, while the "slave" is located in the middle.

If you haven't touched that, definitely take a moment to detach and reattach the cables to make sure everything is snug. It's rare, but it's possible the IDE cable has been damaged or needs replaced. So try that too.

If all else fails, it might be the hard drive itself. Try it on the IDE channel by itself as the master. Try it in another PC if that's an option.

there was a virus on our computer that made our operating system disappear and our friend is still puzzled to the extent that it may be a new virus. He had to fix it and install the operating system all over again. He isn't sure if it is horse or virus and believe me he knows his stuff.

Have you tried changing the hard drive cable?
This can also happen if the IDE port on the motherboard is faulty.
