I read on some websites that you have to be to the pier an hour before the boat departs? Is this true? It really seems like a waste of time.

No, 20 minutes. They have a line up time at the dock when you get there. You have to order your tickets early, it can sell out several days in advance.

They do recommend that, but not really. But if you are there early and they havn't filled the earlier ferry, they would let you go on the earlier ferry. At least it was like that for me last time. Enjoy the trip.
